Approach to Religion

The First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa

IS A RELIGIOUS COMMUNITY
, forming part of the Unitarian Universalist Association of North America, with a rich Judeo-Christian heritage and a tradition of religious freedom originating in Europe 400 years ago;

VALUES WISDOM AND INSIGHT from all religions and other sources about life and an ultimate reality expressed variously as the whole life - known and unknown, God, Creative Spirit, Life Force;

AFFIRMS THAT CENTRAL TO RELIGION is the relation of the individual to this reality, however perceived, combined with a freely determined and committed search for truth; and

ATTESTS THAT SHARING IN THIS QUEST broadens, enriches and enlivens the experience of all who participate in the religious community.

The Goals of The Congregation Are to

OFFER A PLACE
and provide a suitable atmosphere for worship, meditation, celebration and fellowship;

TO HELP CHILDREN, YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADULTS to develop their potential spiritually, emotionally and intellectually;

TO BE COMMITTED TO THE QUEST for truth and to action based on findings and conclusions;

TO INCREASE MORAL AND RELIGIOUS AWARENESS in individuals and society;

TO PARTICIPATE IN ALLEVIATING AND RESOLVING social problems and conflicts through personal and collective action;

TO PROMOTE THE WORTH AND DIGNITY of every person; to strive for a just, peaceful and caring world community; and to encourage the responsible use of the earth and its resources; and

TO SUPPORT ACTIVELY the denomination regionally, nationally and internationally.

It Is The Responsibility of Members and Friends

TO FORM A PART OF THIS RELIGIOUS COMMUNITY; to respect and value its traditions and yet maintain an open mind in the continuing quest for new religious and moral insights;

TO JOIN FREELY IN THE FELLOWSHIP of the Congregation and to be considerate of the need and concerns of other members, adherents and their families;

TO TAKE AN ACTIVE PART in the functioning and further development of the congregation;

TO ASSUME A RESPONSIBLE SHARE of the financial support needed for the operations, programs and facilities of the congregation; and

TO HELP INTERESTED PERSONS become informed about the congregation and its approach to religion.
