Model B 7' Grand Piano

In April 2007, after four-and-a-half years of enthusiastic fundraising, the First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa welcomed its new Steinway B grand piano into Worship Hall.

Music director Jane Perry and her team of experts (including Ottawa pianists Sandra Webster and Dina Namer) visited the Steinway factory in New York City (Queen’s) in March 2007, to choose the church’s new instrument. The Ottawa selection team was treated to an extensive tour of the Steinway factory and a visit from Henry Steinway, the octogenarian grandson of Steinway’s founder!

The piano was celebrated with inaugural concerts on October 19 and 21, 2007. The October 21st public celebration featured Ottawa concert pianist Andrew Tunis, with flutist Robert Cram and cellist Paul Marleyn.

This beautiful new piano represents many things: a gorgeous support to Sunday-morning singing; the time, love, and energy of church members; the financial and moral support of community music groups who generously helped us with fundraising; and a physical demonstration of this church’s commitment to music-making in Ottawa.

Our Worship Hall (with its new piano) is available for rent to chamber ensembles, soloists, and community music groups who wish to hold concerts in our 300-seat hall.

Music Director Jane Perry thanks the Steinway At First fundraising team for the years of creative fundraising and great teamwork; the Pie Makers and Bakers, whose pastry sales contributed $16,000 to the fundraising effort; Ken Lauzon and Sheila Alain at Lauzon Music Ltd; the Ottawa West Junior Music Club, Singers’ Storybook, and Ottawa Chamber Orchestra, for assisting in the fundraising; all of the individual musicians who donated their time to fundraising performances; David Anderson (Registered Piano Technician) for his technical advice and onsite support; and the congregation itself, for getting excited about the Steinway project. May there be many years of wonderful music-making with the new Steinway B!
