Our Faith

The First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa is a non-creedal church. While its roots are found in the Judeo-Christian traditions, all religious truths are celebrated alongside the findings of science. Individual conscience and belief forged amidst the tender joys, the deeper sorrows, and successes and difficulties of life guide us. Most Unitarian Universalists would agree to be guided by the Unitarian Universalist Associations Principles and Purposes. In addition, the congregation worked out its own Approach to Religion Statement in 1983.

Unitarian Universalist Congregations are made up of people of diverse beliefs who cherish the support of the membership for individual conscience. At the same time they are willing to make a commitment to support the institution which they call their religious home with volunteer time and as generous a financial pledge as circumstances allow.

Amongst our most cherished principles is the support of the dignity and worth of all people. As a result you will often find UUs working for the poor and the oppressed at home and around the globe. Our Congregation is open to every man, woman, and child who might choose to be with us. We do not discriminate against anyone on the basis of religion, creed, nationality, race, sexual orientation, cultural background, gender or age. When we become aware of a prejudice within, we work diligently to educate ourselves and overcome the prejudice and find a way to support the dignity and worth of the other person.
