Working Group

USC Canada (originally known as the Unitarian Service Committee) was founded in 1945 by Dr. Lotta Hitschmanova. Its first home was the basement of The Church of Our Father, Unitarian, in Ottawa (now First Unitarian Congregation). From its inception, the core goal of USC has been to aid those most in need. Dr. Lotta founded the organization in a desire to help the starving, displaced children of Europe whose lives had been devastated by World War II. What began as a relief agency offering emergency assistance of various types, including clothing and food drives, has now grown into a development agency that attacks poverty at its roots and works to strengthen social justice.
